Global Market Cues
Global markets are reacting to the US President Donald Trump's announcement of new tariff rates on 14 trading partners, set to take effect from August 1. This has sparked caution among investors worldwide.
- US Markets: On Monday, US stock markets closed significantly lower. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 0.94%, the S&P 500 declined by 0.79%, and the Nasdaq Composite lost 0.92%. US stock futures were also trading lower in Asian hours.
- Asian Markets: Asia-Pacific markets displayed a mixed performance. While some, like Japan's Nikkei 225 (up 0.36%) and South Korea's Kospi (up 0.44%), saw gains, Hong Kong's Hang Seng index futures indicated a weak opening.
- European Markets: European indices were also mixed, with the pan-European Stoxx 600 hovering near neutral, the FTSE 100 slipping 0.1%, and the CAC 40 showing little movement. Germany's DAX, however, managed a 0.4% gain.
GIFT Nifty and Domestic Cues
GIFT Nifty indicates a subdued opening for the Indian equity benchmarks.
- GIFT Nifty: GIFT Nifty futures were trading with a negative bias in early hours. At 6:40 AM, it was 18 points lower at 25,521, and around 7:11 AM, it was 7 points lower at 25,509. Earlier, at 2:30 AM, it was at 25,475.5, down 36.5 points (-0.14%). This trend suggests a negative to muted start for the Nifty 50, with a discount of approximately 40-44 points from its previous close.
- Previous Session (Monday): The Indian equity market concluded Monday's session largely flat. The Sensex edged up by 9.61 points (0.01%) to 83,442.50, and the Nifty 50 closed marginally higher by 0.30 points at 25,461.30.
- India-US Trade Deal: A critical domestic cue is the ongoing uncertainty surrounding a potential mini trade deal between India and the US. July 8 is a crucial deadline, as failure to reach an agreement could lead to Indian exports facing 26% tariffs from July 9.
- FII/DII Activity: Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) have continued to be net sellers, with outflows of ₹5,773 crore so far this month (as of July 7), which could exert pressure on market sentiment, despite support from Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs).
