Outward Remittances Under RBI Liberalised Remittance Scheme Hit Record $20.09 Billion in First Eight Months of 2026
Outward remittances from India under the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) surpassed the $20 billion mark during the first eight months of calendar year 2026. Resident Indians remitted approximately $20.09 billion abroad between January and August 2026, up 5.26% from an estimated $19.08 billion recorded during the corresponding period of 2025.
The nearly $1 billion net increase underscores an expanding appetite among Indian residents for foreign travel, education, and offshore asset allocation, even as regulatory authorities keep a close watch on foreign exchange outflows.
Travel Dominates Outflows
Overseas travel remained the single largest driver of outflows under the LRS umbrella. Indian residents spent a total of $10.96 billion on international travel between January and August 2026, rising from $10.67 billion in the same period of 2025.
Monthly central bank data reveals consistent momentum across the travel category:
- Travel remittances stood at $1.658 billion in April 2026 before registering $1.63 billion in August 2026.
- Education-related travel, covering tuition fees and hostel living expenses, nearly doubled from $450.16 million in March 2026 to $855.52 million in August 2026.
- Leisure and other travel remittances, which include holiday bookings and payments via international credit cards, climbed from $623.05 million in March 2026 to $713.80 million in August 2026.
Surge in Overseas Equity and Debt Investments
Beyond travel and family support, resident Indians sharply accelerated their financial investments abroad. Outflows routed into overseas equity and debt instruments surged to $2.61 billion during the eight-month period ending August 2026, up 86% compared to $1.40 billion in the corresponding period of 2025.
On a sequential basis, overseas capital market allocations expanded significantly through the year, moving from $178.8 million in January 2026 to $321.5 million in August 2026.
The Regulatory Backdrop
Under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme, the RBI permits resident individuals to remit up to $250,000 per financial year for permissible current and capital account transactions. In the preceding fiscal year (FY 2025–26), full-year outward remittances under the scheme were led by:
Key Components in FY 2025–26:
- Travel remittances amounting to $16.438 billion.
- Maintenance of close relatives abroad totaling $3.539 billion.
- Investments in equity and debt instruments reaching $2.652 billion.
The sustained pace of outward transfers has brought renewed scrutiny to the mechanism. Market analysts note that reports indicating the RBI has considered potential curbs to stem foreign exchange outflows should be tracked carefully by market participants, as policymakers evaluate macro stability and domestic currency liquidity.
