Sensex Climbs 384 Points and Nifty Closes Above 23,950 as Broader Markets Outperform IT Drags
Benchmark domestic equity indices extended their upward trajectory, with the Nifty 50 closing comfortably above the 23,950 mark following broad-based buying across non-technology sectors. Strong demand in media, metals, and real estate propelled market sentiment, easily offsetting headwinds in blue-chip information technology exporters.
At the closing bell, the 30-share BSE Sensex advanced 383.55 points, or 0.50 per cent, to settle at 77,301.40. Meanwhile, the broader 50-share NSE Nifty 50 added 149.75 points, or 0.63 per cent, to conclude the session at 23,960.60.
Market breadth decisively favored the bulls, with 2,948 shares advancing compared to 1,260 declining stocks on the exchanges, while 170 counters settled unchanged. Broader markets outpaced the frontline gauges, as the Nifty Midcap index rose 1.3 per cent and the Nifty Smallcap index rallied up to 2 per cent. Indicating a cooling in near-term nervousness, the India VIX volatility gauge dropped 2.86 per cent to 15.27.
Sectoral Performance
The sectoral landscape saw pronounced divergence between domestic-facing cyclicals and global tech plays:
- Nifty Media: Emerged as the day's star performer, surging 5 per cent on aggressive buying.
- Metal and Realty: Both indices climbed 2 per cent each on the back of sustained institutional interest.
- Consumer Durables, Energy, and FMCG: Ended with steady gains, each advancing around 1 per cent.
- Nifty IT: Proved to be the primary sectoral laggard, declining between 1.5 per cent and 2 per cent amid heavy selling pressure across frontline tech bellwethers.
Top Movers on Dalal Street
Among individual Nifty constituents, defense major Bharat Electronics (BEL), Titan Company, Adani Enterprises, Jio Financial Services, and Max Healthcare featured among the top gainers, providing critical support to the benchmark index. On the downside, IT titans including Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Infosys dragged the indices, bearing the brunt of sectoral profit-taking.
Market Drivers and Outlook
Domestic trading sentiment benefited from a confluence of macroeconomic tailwinds and selective foreign institutional investor (FII) participation.
Analyzing the day's dynamics, Ankur Punj, Managing Director at Equirus Wealth, noted that easing geopolitical tensions in West Asia, softening crude oil prices, and encouraging corporate earnings have provided essential support to market sentiment. He added that despite mixed global cues, domestic equities witnessed strong buying interest, further reinforced by fresh FII inflows and a recovery in the Indian rupee against the US dollar.
