TVS Motor Unveils European-Spec Orbiter EV With Removable Batteries at EICMA 2026
TVS Motor Company has unveiled the European-specification Orbiter electric scooter at the EICMA 2026 motorcycle show in Milan, marking a significant step in the Indian two-wheeler major's overseas electric vehicle (EV) strategy. Positioned for daily urban commuting, the European version of the Orbiter distinguishes itself with a removable battery setup designed to meet European charging and parking requirements.
Developed, engineered, and manufactured at TVS Motor's research and development and production facilities in India, the Orbiter is slated for European Union type approval in 2027. Market-specific pricing and dealership arrival timelines will be announced closer to its commercial launch.
Technical Specifications and Charging Flexibility
The European-spec Orbiter is positioned in Europe's L1e vehicle category with a governed top speed of 45 km/h, powered by a hub-mounted brushless DC (BLDC) motor that produces a rated output of 1.85 kW and a peak output of 2.9 kW.
The scooter will be offered with two lithium-ion NMC (nickel manganese cobalt) battery pack options:
- 1.8 kWh Variant: Offers an expected World Motorcycle Test Cycle (WMTC) range of 70 km, with a 0–80% charge time of 2 hours and 39 minutes using a 550 W charger.
- 3.1 kWh Variant: Delivers an expected WMTC range of 105 km, requiring 4 hours and 33 minutes to achieve an 80% charge.
A standout feature over the domestic Indian specification is the removable battery architecture. Users can charge the pack directly on board via a standard household socket or detach the battery to charge indoors via an optional dedicated charging dock, catering directly to European urban commuters without dedicated private parking.
Other mechanical and structural elements include:
- A 14-inch front alloy wheel (90/80 tyre) and a 12-inch rear wheel (90/90 tyre) paired with telescopic front forks and twin rear shock absorbers.
- Braking anchored by a 220 mm front disc brake and a 130 mm rear drum brake with a Combined Braking System (CBS).
- A 34-litre under-seat storage area, 760 mm seat height, full LED lighting, and a 5-inch colour instrument cluster integrated with TVS SmartXonnect, Bluetooth, and on-board LTE capabilities.
Strategic Push into European Markets
The Orbiter formed part of TVS Motor's four-model production display in Milan, alongside the TVS M1-S electric maxi-scooter, the premium TVS X performance scooter, and the TVS RTR 125 internal combustion commuter.
The Chennai-based automaker, which operates a Global Centre of Excellence for Design and Engineering in Bologna, Italy, is aggressively widening its European sales footprint. TVS currently operates over 100 retail outlets in Italy—where sales surged 110% over the past year—along with 22 retailers across Spain and Portugal, with upcoming expansions targeted at France and Germany.
Relevance for Indian Investors and the Domestic Market
For investors tracking TVS Motor Company on the NSE and BSE, the overseas introduction of the Orbiter reinforces several core growth drivers:
Export Revenue Diversification: TVS Motor has outlined a strategic roadmap targeting international markets to contribute 30% or more of its total corporate revenues by 2030. Launching market-tailored EV offerings in developed markets provides higher-margin opportunities compared to traditional entry-level exports.
Technology Transfer and Domestic Spillovers: While the TVS Orbiter in India is sold with fixed battery packs as an accessible family scooter alongside the iQube line, the validation of removable battery tech for international homologation creates operational optionality. If Indian consumer preferences or regulatory tailwinds shift further toward battery-as-a-service (BaaS) and modular charging, TVS already possesses production-ready tooling and architectures developed on domestic assembly lines.
Operational Scale: By consolidating the R&D and manufacturing of global EV platforms in India, TVS Motor benefits from local supply chain efficiencies, economies of scale, and government manufacturing incentives, which help protect consolidated operating margins against domestic price competition.
