MCX Shares Slump 7% to Hit Intraday Low of ₹3,252 Despite Doubling Q2 Net Profit to ₹455 Crore
Shares of Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) dropped as much as 7% on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, hitting an intraday low of ₹3,252 on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). The sharp decline snapped a multi-day winning streak just a day after the stock reached a 52-week high of ₹3,538, reflecting aggressive profit-booking by market participants following the announcement of its financial results for the second quarter of FY27.
Stellar Operational Performance in Q2 FY27
Despite the market decline, the commodity exchange delivered robust operational metrics, with revenue and net profit doubling year-on-year on the back of rising participation in commodity derivatives:
- Net Profit: Consolidated profit after tax surged 130.2% year-on-year to ₹454.57 crore, compared to ₹197.47 crore in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year.
- Revenue from Operations: Revenue jumped 113.7% year-on-year to ₹799.66 crore from ₹374.23 crore in Q2 FY26.
- Operating EBITDA: Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) advanced 146% year-on-year to ₹664 crore, expanding operating margins to 78% compared to 72.3% a year earlier.
- Turnover Growth: The Average Daily Turnover (ADT) in futures grew to ₹62,819 crore, while the options segment witnessed massive expansion, with ADT surging to ₹12,00,129 crore.
Praveena Rai, Managing Director and CEO of MCX, noted that the quarterly results reflect deep-rooted market trust and the growing relevance of exchange-traded commodity derivatives in India. Moving ahead, the exchange plans to broaden product offerings and strengthen its underlying technology infrastructure.
Why the Stock Stumbled
The sell-off was driven primarily by positioning and cost pressures rather than weak operational headline numbers:
- Profit-Booking at Life Highs: MCX shares had gained significantly ahead of the earnings release, having rallied more than 53% year-to-date in 2026 and doubling from their 52-week low of ₹1,762. Traders used the earnings release as a liquidity window to book profits.
- Rise in Operating Expenses: Total expenses expanded 40.5% year-on-year to ₹211.36 crore, led by climbing IT and software costs as well as higher product license fees, alongside increased tax provisions that trimmed bottom-line beats against some street projections.
- Valuation Concerns: With the stock having returned multibagger gains over recent years, elevated valuations have left little room for negative surprises, prompting institutional investors to exercise caution.
Technical Levels and Outlook
From a technical perspective, analysts highlighted that the pullback represents a standard correction within an ongoing broader uptrend. The stock faced stiff resistance near the ₹3,538 mark. Technical analysts identified ₹3,225 as an immediate key support zone. Market analysts recommend that existing investors maintain trailing stop-loss levels, as long-term fundamentals remain supported by structural volume growth across India's financial and commodity markets.
