How October went

India's passenger car market registered 5,50,165 vehicles in October 2025. Volumes pushed ahead 14.4% against October 2024, and surged 85.6% on September. It was the biggest month in our 5-year Vahan record.

That is 8 consecutive months of year-on-year growth for the segment. Year to date, 35,03,746 units have been registered across 10 months, +6.6% on the same stretch of 2024 (32,87,328). The segment accounted for 13.2% of every vehicle registered in India that month.

October is the festive peak. Navratri and Diwali make it the single biggest registration month of most years, so year-on-year comparisons swing on where the festivals fall.

These are privately registered cars and UVs. Vahan books taxis and cabs as a class of their own, another 39,574 in October 2025, and passenger-vehicle figures published elsewhere usually include them. With taxis, the month comes to 5,89,739.

Maruti Suzuki led the segment with 2,20,853 registrations, ahead of Tata Motors (PV) on 70,789 — a gap of 1,50,064 units, wider than the 76,267 it held in September.

Skoda grew fastest among the segment's biggest names at +42.3% year on year (13,374 units); Hyundai had the hardest month of that group, down 6.1% to 65,746.

On share rather than volume — the number that decides who is actually winning — Toyota Kirloskar has added 0.84pp of the segment in 2025, while Hyundai has given up 1.63pp.

Are these wholesale dispatches or retail sales?
These are retail registrations from the government Vahan portal — a vehicle counts when it is actually registered to a buyer at an RTO. The monthly numbers manufacturers announce in press releases are wholesale dispatches to dealers, which is why the two rarely match. Vahan is the same source FADA and the industry use for retail data.
