Coal India October Coal Output Surges 19.3% to 67.2 MT as Dispatches Rise 18.7%
State-run Maharatna miner Coal India Limited (CIL) delivered a strong operational performance for October 2026, reporting double-digit growth across both extraction and customer dispatches, according to regulatory filings submitted to stock exchanges under Regulation 30 of SEBI (LODR) Regulations.
The Kolkata-headquartered coal producer extracted 67.2 million tonnes (MT) of raw coal in October 2026, marking a 19.3% increase compared to 56.4 MT produced during the same month last fiscal year. Total offtake—representing coal supplied and dispatched to power plants and non-power consumers—grew 18.7% year-on-year to 70.3 MT, up from 59.2 MT in October 2025.
Cumulative Seven-Month Trends
While October showed sharp single-month acceleration, year-to-date extraction figures reflect a more measured pace. For the April–October 2026 period (FY27), cumulative production inched up just 0.7% to 388.2 MT from 385.5 MT in the corresponding period of the previous year.
In contrast, total offtake for the April–October window expanded 9.2% to 454.6 MT compared with 416.2 MT a year earlier. The gap between cumulative offtake and cumulative output illustrates that Coal India has actively drawn down built-up pithead inventories to meet elevated thermal power generation requirements across the country.
Subsidiary-Wise Production Breakdown
Operational momentum across CIL's operational arms was largely positive, with Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) leading the pace of expansion:
- Western Coalfields Ltd (WCL): Posted the sharpest monthly growth, with output leaping 64.7% to 5.9 MT from 3.6 MT.
- Eastern Coalfields Ltd (ECL): Increased monthly production by 27.9% to 4.6 MT.
- Central Coalfields Ltd (CCL): Logged a 26.1% production increase to 7.3 MT.
- Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL): Maintained its status as the largest subsidiary by volume, generating 20.8 MT, up 25.3% from 16.6 MT.
- South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL): Raised production by 17.4% year-on-year to 14.3 MT.
- Bharat Coking Coal Ltd (BCCL): Output rose 7.1% to 2.9 MT.
- Northern Coalfields Ltd (NCL): Stood as the sole major producing subsidiary to register a decline, with output dipping 4.3% to 11.4 MT compared to 12.0 MT in October 2025.
Offtake Trends Across Coalfields
Dispatch growth was similarly broad-based, led by strong off-take from Central and Western India mines:
- WCL: Logged a 50.2% jump in dispatches to 6.7 MT.
- CCL: Recorded a 44.7% climb in offtake, reaching 8.0 MT.
- ECL: Dispatched 4.9 MT, reflecting a 35.1% increase.
- SECL: Supplies expanded 19.5% to 15.6 MT.
- MCL: Shipped 20.6 MT, up 13.0% year-on-year.
- NCL: Dispatches slipped marginally by 1.1% to 11.2 MT.
Market and Operational Context
Coal India accounts for over 80% of domestic coal production in India. The sharp uptick in October dispatches arrives at a critical juncture as state utilities ramp up coal stocking ahead of peak winter industrial demand.
Market observers note that sustaining monthly production figures above the 65 MT threshold throughout the second half of the fiscal year will be essential for the state miner to close the gap on its full-year output targets and sustain revenue realizations amid fluctuating e-auction premiums.
