Hero MotoCorp Unveils VIDA Project VXZ Electric Motorcycle at EICMA 2026 in Partnership with Zero Motorcycles
Milan / New Delhi: India’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer, Hero MotoCorp, has officially taken the wraps off its high-profile electric motorcycle concept, the VIDA Project VXZ, at the EICMA 2026 motor show in Milan. Developed in close technical collaboration with California-based Zero Motorcycles, the concept represents the most concrete step yet in Hero’s plan to challenge rivals in the performance electric motorcycle arena.
Alongside Project VXZ, Hero's emerging mobility brand VIDA showcased two other concept machines—the VIDA UBX (a neo-naked urban explorer) and the DIRT.E MX7 (an adult-focused electric dirt bike)—highlighting the automaker's aggressive transition beyond mass-market commuter scooters.
The VIDA x Zero Collaboration
Hero MotoCorp laid the foundation for Project VXZ back in September 2022 when it approved an equity investment of up to $60 million in Zero Motorcycles to co-develop premium electric mobility products. The name "VXZ" directly reflects this partnership, standing for VIDA x Zero.
While Project VXZ incorporates powertrain and software learnings from Zero Motorcycles, patent filings and vehicle architecture reveal that the motorcycle is not merely a rebadged import. Instead, it sits on an entirely bespoke, ground-up platform engineered specifically by and for Hero MotoCorp.
Key Design and Hardware Highlights:
- Streetfighter Stance: Project VXZ adopts sharp, neo-retro roadster aesthetics, featuring an aggressive front fascia, dual-tone bodywork, and LED lighting signatures shared with the wider VIDA family.
- Chassis & Cycle Parts: The concept rides on 17-inch alloy wheels with upside-down (USD) front forks, a rear monoshock, petal disc brakes at both ends, and a belt-drive transmission.
- Cockpit Tech: An oversized full-colour TFT instrument cluster and proprietary switchgear provide access to connected features and electronic riding modes.
- India-Specific Adaptation: Structural elements indicate packaging tailored for local battery assembly, domestic road conditions, and compliance features such as an integrated sari guard.
Moving Beyond Scooters: The Strategic Play
For the Indian automotive market, Project VXZ arrives at a pivotal juncture in two-wheeler electrification.
The domestic electric scooter market has witnessed intense margin pressure, aggressive price discounting, and stiff competition among established manufacturers like TVS Motor Company and Bajaj Auto, as well as pure-play EV start-ups like Ola Electric and Ather Energy. In contrast, the electric motorcycle category remains significantly underpenetrated, dominated primarily by boutique offerings such as Ultraviolette Automotive and Revolt Motors, alongside early-stage prototypes from other incumbents.
By designing a platform ready for volume manufacturing, Hero MotoCorp is aiming to capture early-mover scale in the electric motorcycle segment, which accounts for roughly two-thirds of total two-wheeler sales in India across internal combustion engine (ICE) formats.
Investment and Capacity Trajectory
Hero MotoCorp has been steadily ramping up its Emerging Mobility Business Unit (EMBU). The company has broadened its electric scooter portfolio with models like the VIDA V2 and VX2, supported by Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) financing options.
From an exit run-rate of approximately 15,000 units per month in fiscal 2026, Hero has outlined targets to scale its EV production capacity towards 45,000 units per month during FY27 as new platforms come online. Furthermore, VIDA confirmed at EICMA that it is kicking off customer deliveries in Europe, adopting direct-to-consumer and retail formats across 10 countries through local partner Elektrorider.
What Indian Investors Should Watch
While commercial launch dates and detailed battery kilowatt-hour (kWh) capacities remain under wraps, executive commentary from Hero MotoCorp indicates that production-spec derivatives of its motorcycle platforms—including Project VXZ and the UBX—are slated for sequential introduction starting in 2027.
Market analysts will track:
- Pricing Strategy: Whether Hero can price the production bike competitively against 250cc–400cc ICE motorcycles while maintaining healthy gross margins.
- Component Localisation: The extent of domestic value addition in the battery pack and Zero-derived motor technology to qualify for Indian government manufacturing incentives.
- Charging Infrastructure: Synergies between VIDA's fast-charging network and open interoperability standards across tier-1 and tier-2 Indian cities.
