Relative strength (RS) and RS rating
How a stock has performed compared with the market or its sector. Not the same as RSI.
What is Relative strength?
Relative strength compares a stock's performance with a benchmark. A stock up 10% while the Nifty is up 15% has weak relative strength despite rising. Leadership, meaning stocks that outperform in both up and down markets, is one of the most reliable features of big winners, which is why RS is central to momentum investing. Do not confuse it with RSI, which measures a stock against its own history.
Formula
How to read it
- An RS rating of 90 means the stock outperformed 90% of NSE stocks over the blended period.
- Rising RS during a market correction marks the stocks institutions refuse to sell, often the next leaders.
- A new high in the RS line before a new high in price is a classic early-leadership signal.
Common mistakes
- Assuming high RS means cheap or safe. It is purely about price leadership, and leaders fall hard when momentum turns.
