What is SuperTrend indicator?
SuperTrend plots a single line that sits below price in an uptrend and above it in a downtrend, set a multiple of the Average True Range away from the midpoint of each bar. Because the distance adapts to volatility, it gives volatile stocks more room than calm ones. It is especially popular with Indian traders; the common setting is (10, 3): a 10-period ATR and a multiplier of 3.
Formula
Basic upper band = (high + low) ÷ 2 + 3 × ATR(10)
Basic lower band = (high + low) ÷ 2 − 3 × ATR(10)
The bands only ratchet in the trend's favour; the trend flips when the close crosses the active band.
How to read it
- Close above the line = uptrend (buy signal when it flips up); below = downtrend.
- The line doubles as a trailing stop-loss level for trend trades.
- Flips are rarer on weekly charts, which makes weekly SuperTrend a useful higher-time-frame filter.
Common mistakes
- Using it in sideways markets, where it flips repeatedly and each flip loses a little.
- Tightening the multiplier to get earlier signals. That also doubles the whipsaws.
