📖 What a descending triangle is

Price bounces off nearly the same low repeatedly while every rally tops out lower than the one before. A horizontal line under the lows and a falling line over the highs close together to the right.

Why it forms

A standing bid holds the floor, but sellers keep cutting their asking price to hit it. Each lower high says the buyers who were willing to pay up have gone. When the bid is filled or pulled, price drops through the floor.

🎯 Trigger

A daily close below the flat support line, usually with a clear pickup in volume.

📏 Target

Take the height of the triangle at its widest and project that distance down from the breakdown level.

🛑 Invalidation

A close back above the falling resistance line, which says the sequence of lower highs has ended.

Forming
VSTIND descending triangle pattern on daily candles, with the pattern boundaries and breakout level drawn
The shaded band is the formation. On tops and bottoms the indigo line traces the shape itself — up into the left shoulder, over the head, and away from the right — and the dashed line is the neckline it has to break; on triangles, wedges and channels the two solid boundaries are the pattern. Triangle markers are the swing highs and lows those lines were fitted through, and the dash-dot line is the measured-move target once the pattern has broken.
❓ Descending Triangle FAQ
Is a descending triangle always bearish?
It leans bearish, and that is how it is usually traded, but it is not a rule. In a strong uptrend a descending triangle often resolves upward as a pause rather than a top. The flat support breaking is what makes it bearish, not the shape alone.
What is the difference between a descending triangle and a falling wedge?
A descending triangle has a FLAT lower boundary and a falling upper one. A falling wedge has BOTH boundaries falling, with the upper falling faster. The descending triangle is bearish; the falling wedge is usually bullish.
How reliable is a descending triangle?
It is more reliable when the flat support has been tested at least three times and the breakdown comes on heavy volume. A break on thin volume is often recovered within a few sessions.

How these are found: swing highs and lows are picked out with a percentage ZigZag on daily and weekly candles, and the boundaries are line-fitted through those swings. A formation is only published when the fit is tight, the boundaries are actually touched several times, and the price action stays inside them. The most recent swing is provisional, so a forming pattern can still change shape on the next candle, and patterns whose break already played out are dropped rather than shown as fresh. Levels and targets are the textbook measured moves, not forecasts. This is auto-generated market data, not investment advice.
