What is Market capitalisation: large, mid and small caps?
Market capitalisation is the share price multiplied by the number of shares outstanding: what the market says the whole company is worth. SEBI's 2017 categorisation rules, used by all mutual funds, rank every listed company by full market cap: the top 100 are large caps, ranks 101-250 mid caps, and everything from 251 down small caps. AMFI publishes the official list every six months using six-month average market caps.
Formula
Market cap = share price × shares outstanding
Large cap: rank 1-100 · Mid cap: 101-250 · Small cap: 251 onwards (by full market cap)
How to read it
- Large caps are more liquid and less volatile; small caps have historically offered higher long-run returns with much deeper drawdowns.
- Market cap moves daily with price, so boundary companies can switch categories between AMFI's semi-annual lists.
- Free-float market cap (excluding promoter holdings) is what index providers use for weights.
Common mistakes
- Assuming small caps are 'cheaper' because their share price is low. Share price alone says nothing about value.
