How March went
India's passenger vehicle market registered 3,40,690 vehicles in March 2024. Volumes edged down 3.6% against March 2023, and eased 2.6% on February.
Passenger vehicles (PV, also called 4W) are privately registered cars and UVs plus taxis and cabs, which Vahan books as a class of their own. In March 2024 that was 3,10,805 cars and UVs and 29,885 taxis and cabs; taxis were 8.8% of the total. Against March 2023, cars and UVs were −6.7% and taxis +49.1%.
Year to date, 11,11,734 units have been registered across 3 months, +8.5% on the same stretch of 2023 (10,24,789). The segment accounted for 15.2% of every vehicle registered in India that month.
March is the fiscal year-end, when dealers clear stock and commercial buyers time purchases for the depreciation year.

Every figure is a vehicle registration, taken from the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways' Vahan 4 dashboard (vahan.parivahan.gov.in) — the same source FADA and the industry use for retail data. Registrations are not the wholesale dispatch numbers manufacturers announce each month. "EV" means battery electric (Vahan fuels PURE EV and ELECTRIC(BOV)); hybrids are counted separately.
