How April went
India's passenger vehicle market registered 4,28,819 vehicles in April 2026. Volumes rose sharply 14.3% against April 2025, and fell back 8.6% on March. It was the strongest April in that record.
Passenger vehicles (PV, also called 4W) are privately registered cars and UVs plus taxis and cabs, which Vahan books as a class of their own. In April 2026 that was 3,92,347 cars and UVs and 36,472 taxis and cabs; taxis were 8.5% of the total. Against April 2025, cars and UVs were +13.7% and taxis +21.9%.
That is 14 consecutive months of year-on-year growth for the segment. Year to date, 18,56,516 units have been registered across 4 months, +19.0% on the same stretch of 2025 (15,60,272). The segment accounted for 15.7% of every vehicle registered in India that month.
April opens the new fiscal year, usually with price revisions and a reset in dealer inventory.
