How September went

India's passenger vehicle market registered 4,38,399 vehicles in September 2026. Volumes climbed sharply 36.4% against September 2025, and rose 5.6% on August. It was the strongest September in that record.

Passenger vehicles (PV, also called 4W) are privately registered cars and UVs plus taxis and cabs, which Vahan books as a class of their own. In September 2026 that was 3,98,915 cars and UVs and 39,484 taxis and cabs; taxis were 9.0% of the total. Against September 2025, cars and UVs were +34.6% and taxis +57.9%.

That is 19 consecutive months of year-on-year growth for the segment. Year to date, 39,76,202 units have been registered across 9 months, +23.7% on the same stretch of 2025 (32,15,384). The segment accounted for 17.0% of every vehicle registered in India that month.

September is the quiet month before the festive peak — buyers routinely defer registrations into the auspicious October window.

Privately registered cars and utility vehicles (Vahan class Motor Car) plus taxis and cabs (Motor Cab and Maxi Cab), which Vahan books as a class of their own. Passenger-vehicle (PV, or 4W) sales figures published elsewhere usually count both; our car sales report counts the cars alone.

Which state registers the most passenger vehicles in India?
Maharashtra is the largest passenger vehicle market with 5,24,760 registrations in 2026 so far, 12.1% of the national total, ahead of Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat.
Are these wholesale dispatches or retail sales?
These are retail registrations from the government Vahan portal — a vehicle counts when it is actually registered to a buyer at an RTO. The monthly numbers manufacturers announce in press releases are wholesale dispatches to dealers, which is why the two rarely match. Vahan is the same source FADA and the industry use for retail data.
