How May went
India's passenger vehicle market registered 3,24,005 vehicles in May 2025. Volumes held steady (+0.2%) against May 2024, and contracted 13.6% on April.
Passenger vehicles (PV, also called 4W) are privately registered cars and UVs plus taxis and cabs, which Vahan books as a class of their own. In May 2025 that was 2,97,308 cars and UVs and 26,697 taxis and cabs; taxis were 8.2% of the total. Against May 2024, cars and UVs were +0.7% and taxis −4.9%.
That is 3 consecutive months of year-on-year growth for the segment. Year to date, 18,84,277 units have been registered across 5 months, +5.2% on the same stretch of 2024 (17,90,580). The segment accounted for 14.0% of every vehicle registered in India that month.
May is the pre-monsoon window — rural demand is still waiting on the first rains.
