India's passenger vehicle market registered 3,55,619 vehicles in April 2024. Volumes grew strongly 18.1% against April 2023, and rose 4.4% on March.

Passenger vehicles (PV, also called 4W) are privately registered cars and UVs plus taxis and cabs, which Vahan books as a class of their own. In April 2024 that was 3,27,754 cars and UVs and 27,865 taxis and cabs; taxis were 7.8% of the total. Against April 2023, cars and UVs were +15.7% and taxis +55.7%.

What counts as a passenger vehicle (PV)?
Privately registered cars and utility vehicles (Vahan class Motor Car) plus taxis and cabs (Motor Cab and Maxi Cab), which Vahan books as a class of their own. Passenger-vehicle (PV, or 4W) sales figures published elsewhere usually count both; our car sales report counts the cars alone.

Which state registers the most passenger vehicles in India?
Maharashtra is the largest passenger vehicle market with 5,00,653 registrations in 2024, 11.8% of the national total, ahead of Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat.
Are these wholesale dispatches or retail sales?
These are retail registrations from the government Vahan portal — a vehicle counts when it is actually registered to a buyer at an RTO. The monthly numbers manufacturers announce in press releases are wholesale dispatches to dealers, which is why the two rarely match. Vahan is the same source FADA and the industry use for retail data.
