How February went

India's passenger vehicle market registered 3,21,394 vehicles in February 2025. Volumes slipped 8.1% against February 2024, and tumbled 35.2% on January.

Passenger vehicles (PV, also called 4W) are privately registered cars and UVs plus taxis and cabs, which Vahan books as a class of their own. In February 2025 that was 2,95,504 cars and UVs and 25,890 taxis and cabs; taxis were 8.1% of the total. Against February 2024, cars and UVs were −8.4% and taxis −4.9%.

Year to date, 8,17,656 units have been registered across 2 months, +6.0% on the same stretch of 2024 (7,71,044). The segment accounted for 16.1% of every vehicle registered in India that month.

February is the shortest month on the calendar, which flatters its daily run-rate and flatters nothing else.

What counts as a passenger vehicle (PV)?
Privately registered cars and utility vehicles (Vahan class Motor Car) plus taxis and cabs (Motor Cab and Maxi Cab), which Vahan books as a class of their own. Passenger-vehicle (PV, or 4W) sales figures published elsewhere usually count both; our car sales report counts the cars alone.

What share of passenger vehicles sold in India are electric?
Electric vehicles are 4.23% of passenger vehicle registrations in 2025 — 1,95,852 units, a change of +1.74pp on 2024. This counts battery EVs only; hybrids are reported separately.
Which state registers the most passenger vehicles in India?
Maharashtra is the largest passenger vehicle market with 5,63,020 registrations in 2025, 12.2% of the national total, ahead of Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat.
Are these wholesale dispatches or retail sales?
These are retail registrations from the government Vahan portal — a vehicle counts when it is actually registered to a buyer at an RTO. The monthly numbers manufacturers announce in press releases are wholesale dispatches to dealers, which is why the two rarely match. Vahan is the same source FADA and the industry use for retail data.
